Sapphire Promise Ring

Why a sapphire promise ring?

Usually when you think about a promise ring, you think about one person pledging to another that they may be engaged to be married some day.

However, a promise ring can be given for many types of commitments.

It doesn't have to be a diamond, either. A sapphire promise ring is beautiful, and just as special.

The pledge made by the promise ring should be clearly understood by both the giver and the receiver.

You could end up in quite a sticky situation if one of you misinterpret the reason behind the ring.

This is especially true when you give a promise of lifelong friendship. The other person may interpret this gift as a sign of romantic intentions.

For example, if you give a promise ring to a platonic friend, she might think you want to take the relationship in another direction. Even if the thought never crossed her mind before, she may start looking at you in a different light. This could ruin a wonderful friendship.

A promise ring generally means that you want to be engaged, but you are not quite ready to make such a solid commitment. The ring means the two of you will be exclusive, and not date other people, but you do not yet plan to be married. In most cases, one person gives the ring to another, although it is also quite common for the couple to exchange rings.

Another type of promise is that of purity. In some cultures a parent will give a child a purity promise ring, which symbolizes that the child will abstain from sex until marriage. Other types of purity rings symbolize that the receiver promises to abstain from bad habits such as smoking, drinking or gambling. The nice thing about this type of promise ring is that it is perfectly acceptable to buy one for yourself. Why wait for someone else to surprise you with a promise ring? Give yourself a beautiful sapphire promise ring and be the envy of all your friends.

Some religious groups or cults wear promise rings to show they are deeply committed to abide by the teachings and beliefs of the religion. Every member that wears the promise ring makes a lifelong commitment to practice the beliefs and teachings in daily life.

Can men wear promise rings?

Men have worn all types of rings for centuries. If a man chooses to make a lifelong promise, either to a mate, a pal, a religion or to purity, then he can show this commitment by wearing a promise ring. In fact, a sapphire promise ring looks quite dashing on a man's finger.

Which finger?

Promise rings often look very similar to engagement rings, so to avoid confusion, many people won't wear promise rings on the ring finger of the left hand (as this where the engagement ring would go). Others believe that since the promise ring will some day be replaced by an engagement ring, this is the perfect spot for such a ring.

A promise of purity ring is commonly worn on the ring finger of the right hand, as it is to be replaced by a wedding ring.

Friendship rings and religious commitment rings can be worn on any finger, even the thumb. However, you may want to avoid ring fingers because this could lead to misinterpretations of what the ring means.

How it all began

In ancient ceremonies, a man would give a betrothal ring to the woman he planned to marry. These are believed to be the origin of promise rings. There is no clear evidence that another engagement ring was given later, so these rings could be what are known today as engagement rings. In essence, an engagement ring is a promise to marry, therefore could be considered a promise ring.

Today, a promise ring does not mean the couple will end up getting married, or even engaged, for that matter. All it really represents is that they love each other. This can easily be said without a ring, but a sapphire promise ring is probably the nicest way to show someone how you feel.
